"Sadvertising" Apple commercial- "Holiday - The Surprise"

Image
Holiday- The Surprise, Apple I hope you have some tissues handy if you are about to watch this commercial. Just thinking about this ad and placing it in this blog already has my eyes watering. It's so crazy to think that the same space that shows advertisements of the Charmin bears who happily no longer have bits of toilet paper attached to their butt, or Jake from State Farm who wears his Khakis, Apple has put together a 3 minute mini movie that is absolutely exquisite, down right tearful and I will never forget. Come Christmas time or Superbowl Sunday it seems like every other commercial on TV is trying to make you cry. Enter the new popular fad in marketing: sadvertising. It's not rocket science, its psychology. Commercials that make you feel heavy emotions impact you more, you are more likely to remember and if they are REALLY good, you will share with your friends. (Sorry Michelle for making you watch this and cry!)  Forbes says that most consumers do not make buying decis...

Hard Seltzers hitting Hard!

Image
My intro to Spiked Seltzer: The year was 2016, I was at a women's golf tournament (for charity obviously, as I am not a proficient golf player what so ever) when a coworker handed me a seltzer in a long white can with mermaids on it. Needing a cold drink on a warm spring day, I cracked that baby open and enjoyed some sweet sips of lemon seltzer. After about 20 min or so, I felt a little different, a little happy, more giggly, and after another 20 min I finally got the courage to ask my co-worker, "was there booze in that?" Which she laughed and said "Yes! it's a Spiked Seltzer!" I had just been introduced to one of the newest and most growing products in the alcohol industry. That weekend, I had to pick up a box for myself and for my friends to try and a new GO-TO beverage emerged.  The History Spiked Seltzer was created by Nick Sheilds, a beer company owner in CT who was trying to figure out the solution to his decreasing market share as a result of people ...

Is Abercrombie and Fitch cool again?

Image
Blast from the past I was talking with my friend the other day about where she has been online shopping lately due to the fact there is almost nothing else to do during this time of COVID-19/social distancing and to my surprise she said she is back in love with Abercrombie and Fitch. I was a little taken aback. Just hearing the name brings me such nostalgia as I grew up shopping (and even working) at the store with its heavy cologne, music blasting, dark lighting and trendy clothes. A time where things were simpler where I would proudly wear my moose logo knowing I was cool even though I was a huge goody-two-shoes. It's been about 10 years since I've stepped into the store. The cheap clothes from Forever 21 and Target took over, my closet as I needed more sweatpants, leggings and party outfits to complete a college girl wardrobe. But not only that, all of a sudden Abercrombie became too young for me. I felt uncomfortable shopping in the store next to 15 year olds, trying on clo...

Miss America 2.0 and its Failed Marketing Attempts

Image
If you ask most people what they think about Miss America, they would tell you the pageant is outdated, demeaning to women, and may even throw out the word anti-feminist. But if you actually read the requirements for the scholarship competition you would find that it has transferred from a swimsuit contest and "world peace" promoting beauty pageant to a month long job interview for a coveted position and $50,000 scholarship. This competition includes an onstage question and interview with a panel of judges firing off questions to the candidates about current events, politics, economy, personal and anything else in a media podium setting. The candidates compete in a talent and a red carpet event which displays the personalities of the candidates. Next, they must showcase their personal platform, or what philanthropical cause they are most passionate about and how they plan to promote it during their reign as Miss America. Not to mention, the candidates themselves are all on th...
